Spawned right next to a huge biter nest, with mediumish biter nests below and above me, and a tiny one to my right.

I'm not sure what I did. I was messing with map settings beforehand and got that as a result. Then every map I generated after had the same thing.

Only way I could stop it was by restarting the game.

Didn't you decrease the starting area size? This is exactly what I would expect with starting area set to none.
I have no idea what I'm talking about.

Obviously starting size minimum. Even at starting size set to next above minimum there's quite a bit of space to survive in. Small enough to attract biters even with basic mining and through a forest, but it's still there.

I tried generating some maps with lots of biters and no starting size, but it's pretty much impossible to get a playable map that way.
