I was regenerating new maps to find something suitable and after about 40 mediocre ones I got this

Hahaha! Boats definitely would be very helpful and bridges as well, but not in this situation. And it can even happen with the large amount of water that you end-up at semi-large island and you die out when you mine everything.

Boats / bridges or the ability to deplete water with pumps.

Depletion of smaller water body only then. If it also applies to the bigger ones it's highly unrealistic. The water cycle should refill large lakes easily.
