About half way through I realized that I should have made it out of Belts and Assembly Machines on a game screen.

The chart runs from left to right instead of top to bottom because it fits better on the pages. The organization is that all technologies are placed as far to the left as possible, without being left of, or in the same column as a prerequisite. The main portion of the chart is the first three pages. I split off the upgrade techs to the last three pages because they didn't interact as much with the other technologies.

Electric Energy Distribution 2 and Advanced Oil Processing are to the right of Battery, which is 2 or 3 steps to the right of their prerequisites, because they require Blue science (from Battery). They should probably have Battery as a prerequisite, but that would just create more lines.
I found 4 redundant prerequisites, and left these lines off the chart:
Gates does not need Steel Processing because it is included in Military 2
Railway does not need Steel Processing because it is included in Engine
Rocket Damage 1 and Rocket Shooting Speed do not need Rocketry because it is included in Alien Technology

That might be a fun translation of it!
I'm a very visual person so would prefer that type of thing to the schematic type document. Congrats on making one that does not look like a rat nest. :)

eh, I didn't like that implantation in civ5 because it isn't natural to scroll sideways /w mouse, also the looks of it already in its current iteration shows very little information per screen space, where as the current tech tree shows all the tech in one page. GUI isn't something I want to fluff around with

This looks rather nice, considering how messy our tech tree is. :)

How did you make this? Did you use some graph-drawing tool or did you hand-place everything?

I made it with a home version of Microstation SE circa 1998.It's so simple it still runs on Windows 7, and starts up faster than any other program I have. It was mostly a lot of coping and pasting.
I just got Factorio about a month ago and got as far as Oil Processing and decided I needed something to help plan what I wanted to do. It's probably more help for beginners than for people that already know the game.
