Music for Factorio

Hi,
a few years ago, we were creating game at university. It was just school project, but I spent a lot time on internet to discover proper music background for our game (it was 2D in 3D graphic (like Trine) where your main hero got black hole gun, which enabled him to create small black hole for short time. The center of gravity helped you to lift obstacles, jump further when used correctly etc.)

Well and after many many hours, I found a amazing amateur music composer with amazing music for my game. I contact him and he was happy to give me all the music I need and he allowed me to use it.

I tried to use this music as background for factorio and I think it works GREAT. The most songs fit perfectly (in my homble opinion).

What do you think? I think the best matching song for this game is "11. The Case", give it a try... I suppose that the music composer of these pieces would allow factorio creators for using it, if they contact him.

You just need to write the missing part.
But yea would be better if you shorten em.

Well, this Trevor Sparham makes nice music. https://soundcloud.com/aamptrack/nino-t ... -beginning

Factorio in-game music should be very "flowing", keeping at the same level (compressed), some longer pieces (some needs to be much longer than 3 mins), but not distracting. I think music with real instruments doesn't work well (I tried that many times, exeption is the main-screen). Sounds, which sounds a bit strange work much better (Electronic sounds or unused played instruments). The mods are dark, dangerous, but also light, nice and sweet; some kind of mechanical works quite well, but also a mix of "strange natural sounds". Background: Wind-like, forest or water is great.

I heard the music many times, while playing and working.

Of course it's difficult to say "This is unuseable", without beeing involved, much is taste of course. But from my standpoint as a hobby-sound-engeneer, useable tracks are:

- Landing (but only for the 10 mins countdown after building the rocket defense!)
- Append (When dead only)
- Beat (nice, when building stuff, has a good flow, bit too much dynamic and a bit distracting)
- Collapsed (somewhere in the beginning of the freeplay,)
- Endless (water, forest, exploring, but also building, should be much, much longer)
- Case (doing nothing, watching the factory, but I think this bass is currently a bit too distracting and leads into the wrong direction at the beginning, then it could be much longer)
- Scratch (night, this is really nice, but the bass is not good there, needs remastering, but would fetch really nicely into the night, also right length)
- Overpass (building, less "drones", then could be much longer)

Most of the tunes needs a bit remastering, because in some ways distracting, especially scratch and case, which are really a nice songs, but have the wrong sound or are too distracting...

ssilk - yea, I agree that the soundtrack should be "consistent", however I dont think that strong good music is distracting at all (distracting would be song "hello kitty" :D ). For example soundtrack for starcraft had really "strong" parts which really gets you even into "music listening", that was sometimes more than just "background". But it was great, it is great and even after 15 years, we all loves the music of SC1 :) : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mD4GbGmvNRc#t=37

And some games goes even further like Black Moon Chronicles : " http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PypvWY2f3_c " are even more "distracting" :). And it works.

I agree that it should be consistent, it should match factorio style, it should "flow" most of time, but I would allow it to be a "distracting" from time to time.

Hm. Those games are not so long.
The game lasts 8 hours. In one piece. Minimum. It is much more important, to have a constance in music, then in any other game I know. Distractions can and must happen. But in a time of 10 hours, they are minutes. Some special moments. Lets say we have 30 minutes of "special moments". Thats 10 pieces of music (a 3 minutes). Much stuff.

So we need for the rest 150 pieces. That's of course stupid. But just to show the dimensions!

Well I dont think these songs I sent we should use as they are. They are quite short and they are not consistent.

But if you like it and you would like to cooperate with trevs (he actually did some special music effects just for me), I think it could work.

The most songs here are not created as "long game background music", but they can be refactored relatively easily to this purpose (especially in - add more tracks and make non-distracting parts much longer)

Have any of you played FTL (Faster Than Light)? Just wanted to say I find the soundtrack amazing and actually think it's somewhat corresponding to the ambient that the Factorio shows when I am playing...

Same can be said to minecraft. Which is really outstanding and could be also a perfect sunday morning breakfast music or a quite chilling friday evening.

Factorio should have a music competition to get new music for it. Perhaps have indy musicians submit their music so factorio can get free/cheap music and the artist can get exposure by creating music for an indy game.

Actually we are already working with a musician from GB to do the sounds and music for factorio. You can check some of his samples here: http://danieljamestaylor.co.uk. He already did the music for the trailer (patience it is coming :D).

I think Factorio would go well with something like this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EimBWr19Rv8

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=29Qhg6wwgZc

Because of the "industrial" sound of it, its calm and doesn't disturb. This with nice ambient sound (machines, belts. wind, trees etc) would make an awesome atmosphere.
But when I think on the early game, where you got nothing and is surrounded by nature, something like this comes to my mind:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XOEyKE7W9IU

Is it possible to make dinamic music, relative to your progress in game? I think it would be pretty cool.

I think Factorio has a great potential for its atmosphere. The visual art direction is perfect imo, the sound part can improve heavly. Ambient sounds and machine sounds would be really nice. But most importantly, setting the atmosphere. Thats what makes Oddworld such a good game imo, it shows how crucial sound desining can be, Silent Hill (1,2,3) too!
