Towns - Was this done before ?

Hi,
I had this idea of smaller, specialized megabases, connected by trains.

Possible names include:
  • Smelton
  • Tech City
  • Oil Creek
  • Powerfarm
  • Scifield
  • Constructown
Just wanted to ask if I discovered something interesting, or is this old news?

smaller, specialized megabases just sounds like bigger city blocks.

I organized my megabase this way, however it's all a huge large area and everything is connected with belts. Trains are just for bringing in the ore, everything else is used on the spot or moved by belts on short distance.
It's like a huge city where you drive from one district to the next without transition. It's the same city, but the district name and the population and the building style changes.

The major design principle is one site for the mall (with its own intermediate production) and another site for research (also with its own intermediate production). The mall intermediate production is smaller and buffered to handle spikes, while the research production is for unbuffered continuous uninterrupted production with no shortages or surplus.

Specialized bases just for one item, connected with trains, are a common solution to divide one big challenge into 2 smaller challenges. Depending on how big you want to get in the end, you might hit a limit with train congestion if you don't take heed of production line placement and rail track disentanglement. And it's kind of UPS inefficient because of the large amount of buffered train stations, which gets important if you build really big.

You could use a mod like this to show the place names:

Mine wasn't a megabase, but I had:

Colbury (Steam power)
Chipton (Circuits)
Forgedale (Copper)
Ironwood (Iron, it was in a forest)
The twin towns of Stoneford and Steelbridge (Guess)
Warchester (Military science)
Westpoint and Forton (Personal combat supplies and ammo belted to defensive walls)
Newton (Blue science)
Frackham (Oil)
Redport (Adv circuits, it was by a lake)
Radsmouth (Nuclear)
Jewelborough (Modules)
Flaskmere (Red and green science, and for some reason processing units)

That's as far as I got. They were all tiny. I did it for a youtube series back in 2015. Great minds think alike!

Your series was the first thing I thought of when I saw this thread, very nostalgic.
I'd love to try a 'towns' playtrough in 2.0, fulgora already seems perfect for it with it being split into islands connected by trains.

Basically yes. But WAY bigger. Like only-one-per-base bigger.

That's exactly what got me. It is the reason I am trying this.
Also thanks for sharing your details.

This is exactly what I had in mind :) I only got to Smelton so far, but it was really big, just next to a rich Iron Ore resource.
Your naming is really good, btw!
I would look up your series for inspiration, if that's ok.

Thank you :)

Well ...
It actually shows me I have watched first video :?
I have totally forgot about it (it was probably years ago), but my brain must have stored that information.
So my original idea clearly comes from Mangledpork serie, including the name

That answers my question, I guess
