The screen goes black for two seconds. Then the game comes back, except it is unresponsive to user input, except the mouse pointer moves.

This happens repeatedly. Sometimes while a saved game is loading. Sometimes the game will run for an hour or two. I haven't noticed any particular action that triggers it. Frequently I am not doing anything in-game when it happens.

When that happens can you check event viewer and see if it says anything about the graphics driver dying and restarting?

I will do that, the next time it happens while I am at the keyboard. I presume you mean the system log? I do have a message, but I'm not sure it at the right time, since game crashed while I was away overnight:
The server Microsoft.SkypeApp_15.61.100.0_x86__kzf8qxf38zg5c!App.AppXtwmqn4em5r5dpafgj4t4yyxgjfe0hr50.mca did not register with DCOM within the required timeout.

I had it die while it was paused (in the game menu) overnight.

When it dies and the game is running, it really is dead. Nothing is moving.

I'm going to try killing the Skype background processes and see if that helps.

I finally caught the crash while I was at the keyboard. The only things in the system log at the time of the crash are warnings, not errors:

DistributedCOM EventID 10016: The application-specific permission settings do not grant Local Activation permission for the COM Server application with CLSID

That's your display driver crashing. Due to bad drivers, bad hardware, or both. There's nothing Factorio can do about that. You'll have to figure out the reason it's crashing and get it fixed on your end.

I had to go to OpenGL to get it to run at all. After applying various updates to drivers and Windows, the intermittent crashes stopped.
