New PC (Ryzen 9 3950x) cannot keep up with upgraded headless server. 5+ Minutes catching up!

Post by kev007 »

Hi everyone,

I was stoked to upgrade my PC to the AMD Ryzen 9 3950x and repurpose my old setup (Intel Core i7-3770k) as a duty relief for my multi-purpose server. My new PC should be magnitudes faster than the one I built in 2012, but this is not the case with the attached saved game running headlessly on the old Intel system. I understand that the game is heavily modded and the base is kinda big, but performance is absolutely garbade, with dips to 5 FPS. UPS is quite stable in the high 50s.
Full Specs are as follows:

Software:
OS: Windows 10 (affects v1909 & v2004)
Factorio: v0.18.28
Mods: ~64 - See mod-list.json

Client:
CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 3950x - 16 Cores @4.0GHz w/ Single Core Peak @4.2GHz
RAM: Corsair Vengeance RGB PRO DDR4 32GB 3200MHz CL16 - Dual Channel
GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 CLASSIFIED
SSD: Samsung 960 EVO 512GB NVMe

Server:
CPU: Intel Core i7-3770K - 4 Cores All @4.5GHz
RAM: G.Skill TridentX DDR3 16GB 2400MHz CL10 - Dual Channel
GPU: Intel HD Graphics 4000
SSD: Some Old SATA thing :)

Do I need faster RAM? Overclock the AMD CPU as well? It's probably not the GPU, though. Having only a somewhat marginal improvement in single-threaded performance in Factorio is quite disappointing. Should I have gone Intel instead?

Any insight is appreciated.

Unfortunately single thread performance and memory latency are not going to be orders of magnitude faster.

Additionally, lots of the time in the update looks to be taken by the Script update, which is a big bottleneck

Some of those mods also look to be spiking, such as the bot replacer mod and factorissimo

Isn't the server simulating the game in lockstep with the client? Shouldn't CPU and Memory Load be identical on all systems running this game?
How come headless simulation is more performant than in-game?

Good point, stutters are present, even at 0.8 game speed. How are the 3 x/x/x values to be interpreted?

I just realized it's you, Klonan. Big fan of your Mods. Good work :)
