Factorio has stopped working

Post by Jarekexe »

For few days now, out of the sudden (I believe, that after steam update), my factorio in Steam doesn't start.

I got "Factorio has stopped working" immediately after launch.
I tried verifying files, downloading all over again, restarts etc...

Factorio downloaded directly from www, works just fine in all versions

Below crash log
Any help?

migx64.dll seems to cause the problem (or at least is related to it) by creating Windows message loop hook in Factorio, but I can't find what application does the DLL belong to.

Below new crashlog
I searched all my harddrives for mig64.* and found nothing....

You missed the "x".

After format and windows reinstall, it worked fine for couple of weeks.
And today, again out of the blue, it stopped working. Any ideas?

Now it's crashed in C:\Windows\SYSTEM32\KBDBUx64.DLL inside Windows Message loop and again google doesn't have any info about the DLL. I think you keep getting some kind of virus/mallware that injects a DLL with fake name into running applications (probably as a keylogger?)

Interesting. I did install a keylogger recently, just to see how it works.
Why is it affecting factorio?

I don't know anything about anything, but I notice that you are pretty dedicated to play factorio, if you reinstall windows to achieve that.

Also I understand from own experience how frustrating it is if a game you want to play doesn't work for any obvious reason. (I remember when doom was out back in the days and it would only run without sound on my pc. I tried everything. All my friends were able to play it with sound effects, but I wasn't. Doom realistically wasn't playable without sound effects. I tell you: That was frustrating). The problem only went away years later, when I got a new pc. So you have my empathy.

Like I said, I don't know anything about anything and some problems remain unresolvable, because they are hardware problems. But I have a very systematic approach to problem solving and when working as software-dev I learned to not take anything for granted. Maybe I can find a piece of the puzzle and help.

I have a few questions regarding your problem:
  • What version of windows are you running? (also 32/64, home/pro ?)
  • Where do your windows installation files orginated from (installation partition on your hd, download - from where, bought cd, ...)
  • Is your win install anything out of the ordinary, like running in a virtual machine?
  • Did you do extensive reconfiguration of windows after reinstalling it?
  • Do you have any out of the ordinary software installed? Specifically anything from questionable sources?
  • Specifically, do you have an amiga emulator installed?
  • Do you have additional virus protection software installed?
  • Your log shows that you run factorio via steam. You run 0.18.30 . So you specifically selected 0.18.30 from the beta branch (otherwise it should have updated to the latest 0.18.34)? Is that correct?
  • As you are writing it stopped working today out of the blue: Did you install/remove or reconfigure anything today/yesterday/lately?
  • What is the version of your nvidia driver?
Some of the reasons for these questions are:
  • A name for a code libraray (migx64), for which a google search returns almost nothing, except a result from the amiga community is very suspicious. Usually there is some info even on the last crappy filename available on the web. A wild guess would be malware, which inserts itself using some made up or random name.
  • The crash occours when info about the display adapters is collected. Maybe you installed some software that enables windows to emulate some resolution from an amgia system? Maybe your graphics dirvers are messed up? Wild guesses, wild guesses, ...
One thing you can easily do to rule out anything steam related, is to download factorio from the website directly and try to run it. It also may reveal some new info. idk. (I didn't read that the download from the website works fine.)

Yeah, apparently we're from the very same planet :) I was raised on Doom (as creepy as it may sound)
Also, I had very similar problem with Settlers II. My sound card was only able to support Music or Sounds. I had to chose each time I played....

To answer your questions:
- I have Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit
- Torrent :( iso file, installed from bootable USB
- No, pretty standard version, not sure about the activation, probably something pre-installed in the Iso
- No, just some basic screen/desktop tweaks
- Definitely the keylogger I mentioned, and maybe macrorecorder + YoloMouse for Diablo 3
- No emulators at all
- No, only windows defender
- Yes, but I chose an older version just to see if it solves my problem. I usually run latest experimental
- Yes, only the keylogger
- Version 26.21.14.4587 (from dxdiag, not sure if that's what you're asking)

Just to make it clear, I can simply uninstall that keylogger and it will most likely go back to normal
That's why format helped last time, because I never re-installed it only until yesterday.
The file you mentioned: C:\Windows\SYSTEM32\KBDBUx64.DLL is a file from my keylogger.

Great! :)

As a side note: When you say "torrent" I assume some "illegal" copy of windows from a questionable source. Man, you are running a high risk there imo. I would never do that. Whoever made that torrent could have done anything to the install files. My biggest fear today would be a bitcoin miner. Running deeply embedded and hidden from windows anti malware software.

After XP I skipped vista, 7 and 8 and ran Ubuntu for years. But with 10 I returned to windows, because contrary to widespread opinion, I think it is really well made (after deactivating all the personal data farming). The machine is the same and it unbeleivably runs faster than with XP. I donwloaded the pro iso from ms directly and spent 10€ on an oem license key. That did not work (all the keys were invalid and after the 3rd claim with the seller I just wrote it off). Now I am running an unregistered win 10 pro for 2 years. Except for a water mark in the right lower corner of the screen there are no downsides to it. Better than some iso anyone could have fiddled with imo. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for a tip, I will definitely consider that.

PS. Minimum wage in Poland is ~400 EUR
Windows costs 50 EUR (not so long ago it was 75 EUR)
