Delta Update

Post by flashg »

Hello,

I was searching and was not able to find an answer:

Is there a delta update mechanism for the game?

I am running the download version from factorio.com, 0.17 exp. Windows.

I would like to avoid downloading all of the 1 GByte for each update.

Thank you

flash

The ingame updater only downloads changed files.

Hello,

thank you, I was trying to update this way, however it did fail to do so. Also I did get the impression that it was trying to download all the files.

Best regards

In the early days the installation size was just around 200MB so there was no incentive to build a sophisticated system for updates, and now most people use steam which is ideal at least in that regard.

This. OP, use Steam. It has ups and downs, but it does have an efficient binary delta based update mechanism, and a paranoid-level safe one. (The later being the cause of most complaints it is slow to update, since it copies all game data, applies the delta, then copies or moves it back. Slooooow, but safe.)
