[0.17] Game no longer runs correctly (low FPS)

Post by OwenProGolfer »

I have an HP ProBook 4540s and have had no problems running Factorio in the past. With the 0.17 update, the game is still at 60 UPS but is consistently at 12-14 FPS, no matter what graphics settings I change. Is this a bug or a problem with my computer/settings?

I'm having the same issues.

With 0.16.51, I had 60 UPS and at rest, 30 FPS, dropping to ~20FPS while moving (when not near smoke - then all bets were off).
With 0.17.9 (not specific to .9) I have 60UPS and 16.9FPS in a brand new world. Once I've played in it, I'm down in the 14.5FPS range, with my UPS dropping into the 40s.

I am playing on a low end system, but I wouldn't expect that much of a drop between versions. I tried .17 with vsync off and on - no change.

I attached the log files from .16 (debug16 folder) as well as .17 (debug17 folder) and the save files for kaboom-16 and 17shore, as well as various screenshots - both in those saves as well as in new worlds (0.16 - 3_13_2019 9_15_28 and 0.17 - 3_13_2019 9_25_03) showing the baseline performance.

Hey, try to set "Video Memory Usage" to "All", disable "Full color depth" and disable "Show clouds" in graphics options.

Thanks for the input. I made those changes. It gained me a little bit, but I'm still not hitting 20 FPS/60 UPS.

I went ahead and disabled the rest of the options: Show Smoke, Show decoratives, Show Item Shadows, Show Inserter Shadows,

That got me to 20 FPS/55 UPS at rest, but when moving it's still in the 19 FPS/55 UPS through 16 FPS/50 UPS range.

Edit: Added logs

Thanks, I can see rendering times are spiking a lot for you, I'll see if I can find out what's causing it and optimize.

I, too am having slow FPS, and it's hard to maneuver the character because the game is so jumpy. FPS = 6.4 when zoomed in, 10.5 when zoomed all the way out, with alt mode engaged, and 14.7 in map view. I have disabled smoke, use half color depth, all video memory settings have been tried and don't seem to matter much. Texture compression is low quality, sprite resolution is normal. Full log is at the end of this message. Save file attached.

My system uses AMD FX-8120 8-core processor at 3.1 GHz, 16 GB RAM, integrated ATI Radeon 3000 graphics (ATI display adapter 0x9616), 512 MB dedicated video memory. MSI Afterburner says both GPUs are at 100%, even on the map and technology screens, each using ~450 MB of memory. The CPUs bounce around from about 30% to 80%.

The above is using version 0.17.21 and many mods, but things are roughly the same with 0.17.28 and no mods. Frame rate was not a problem with 0.16.51. I compare this to the behavior on an old Dell Latitude e6510 laptop, where the UPS drops to about 30, but the FPS stays right with the UPS.

My system uses dual core 2,6 GHz, 4 GB RAM, radeon Hd 5450 with 500 MB video memory (a very poor card for gaming). I was able to play version 16.51 in HD (1920x1080) all graphic options disabled and very small forests with 60 FPS.
Version 0.17 is different. UPS is always at 60 but impossible to play in Hd but if I lower my desktop resolution to 1280x720 I can play with 60 FPS with all graphic options like steam, decoratives enabled and large forests, which looks good but unfortunately I'm playing on a 26''-monitor and things are getting quite unsharp. I personally prefer to play in native HD-resolution all graphic options disabled.
Edit: It took me a while to find this out but you can play factorio in a window with a fixed size to gain more fps and keep your native resolution.
(right click the shortcut to factorio.exe and select properties. In the properties window, add this to the end of the "target" text box:
factorio.exe --window-size 1440x900
You also need to activate another option (run as administrator) in properties and of course, deactivate "fullscreen" in graphic options of the game.
