Low FPS with high sprite resolution

Post by Ogotai »

Hi Folks,

I'm getting 20-23 FPS when using High res sprites, and 60 FPS when using Normal res sprites. No mods, everything vanilla, standard map and new game (Play -> New Game -> Default).

Version 0.16.36.

System is a 7700K @ 4.2GHz, 1080Ti, 32GB memory.

Is there a way to use high res sprites at 60 FPS?

I've just upgraded from 0.15 to 0.16 - from memory, I hadn't had those issues in 0.15, but it's been a while since I played. Maybe I tweaked some settings in 0.15 that carried over to my 0.16 upgrade, but everything in graphics settings looks high, but fine and reasonable for my machine.

Many thanks,

Greg.

Hello, post your Factorio log please. On Windows it is usually located in %APPDATA%\Factorio\factorio-current.log (hit Win + R on keyboard, type %APPDATA% and press OK to quickly get into the APPDATA folder)

I assume you play on 4K display, because that seems to be common denominator for framerate problems on high-end HW lately. Did you play 0.15 on 4K monitor also?
In graphics options, try to change Atlas texture size to 4096 and also change Video memory usage to High (instead of All)

Greetings,

I also have been have this issue on returning to Factorio this weekend.

I am sitting at FPS 30/ UPS 60 on a new map. Unfortunately, this is occur on both high and normal sprite levels.

While I am running on a gaming laptop. I have in the past not had this issue using earlier versions of 0.16.x.

I do have a 4K screen. My NVIDIA GPU is running at around about 20% and according to Task manager it is the GPU handling Factorio.
However, I have noticed that my Intel GPU performance spikes to near 100% while running Factorio even though it is not assigned to Factorio. It appear that a Windows Process called Desktop Windows Manager is pulling a major chunk my Intel GPU performance while Factorio is running and virtually nothing when Factorio is closed. Is a there a link here?

System is Intel i7-4720HQ CPU @ 2.60GHz, 16GB RAM, GeForce GTX 980M, Intel HD Graphics 4600, 4K Screen.

Apologies for the inclusion of the achievement label in one of the screenshots. I can resend a fresh one if needed.

Guess what achievement I have been working on for the last few attempts.

@Osric_athanasius: I'm not sure how much vram that gpu has, but If you have high res sprites enabled, you can try turning sprite-res down to normal. You can also try turning vsync off. If those don't help please include a log file. https://wiki.factorio.com/Log_file

For reference, here's the graphics settings I use to get full performance at high res on a 1060/3GB:

The log is in between the screenshots, VRAM is fine, try deactivating VSync.

Osric_athanasius: that's different from the first problem, I'd be extremely surprised if turning off vsync didn't fix that.

Greetings,

Thank you for the responses.

Unfortunately none of them seem to provide any effect. I will post screenshots and logs for each of the attempted changes below.

The following is with the NVidia GPu VSync set to off and Intel GPU set to performance (this is the nearest setting I can get to turning it off).

Hello, I am currently on a vacation and haven't been able to view the screenshots you posted. I'll get back to you when I return home on Sunday.

EDIT: I checked the logs; try to set Video memory usage to High.

Greetings Posila,

Relax and enjoy your vacation. I think I have found the culprit and figured out a fix.
It took somewhere around 15 different help advice columns, 2 installs of Factorio, 2 installs of drivers and 7 hours.

The cause is indeed the Desktop Windows Manager. So I don't think you will have to whack any bugs in the Factorio code.

The solution is to disable Transparency Effects in Personalise>Colours.

The crazy part was that Factorio's FPS actually got up to 60 after I had Alt-Tab to Task Manager while running the game in the background.

This appears to a Window issue that has popped up in multiple different applications.

Thank you everyone for your advise and assistance. Hopefully, I will not have to repost on this issue.

Now I must see what blueprints and saves I can recover what I deleted.
