16.30 constantly saying I am being dropped from the game

Hi,

When I play online we get the problem whereby I am constantly being dropped from the game. PC spec is fine, and internet is also fine.

There is packet loss when transferring data between you and the server, which leads to delay because it has to be transmitted multiple times and this causes you to drop. Beyond "fixing the connection" there is nothing to remedy this.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.
The host is my friend and i've run a recursive ping to his machine overnight, with 0 packet loss. It is confusing.

If either of you are using wifi, that would be one easy thing to eliminate as the culprit by using only wired connections.

Also, a simple ping doesn't account for their local network, unless you're sending packets to a specific port which is being forwarded, through their router, to their machine. If you're pinging their external IP address, you're only testing from your machine to their modem or router WAN port, and nothing within their local network (such as wifi or a poorly-performing switch under load, or one of those crappy "green" switches which periodically turn off ports when they shouldn't). Even then, periodic pings won't necessarily show when their local connection drops out for 50 ms, but it may if it's run for many hours.

Running multiple instances of the ping (spamming them) to a specific port which is forwarded, for an hour, would be a solid test. Ping Plotter Professional is robust and very user-friendly for this kind of thing (free professional trial available, so grab that and do your test). You can set it up to spam every millisecond if you want (if the hardware can even keep up without intentionally dropping packets), so that you're likely to catch any tiny instance of a connection outage. I've used it off and on for many years and it's pretty handy for ruling out things like this, if you want to find out if it's wifi and can't test out a wired connection.
