Black on the side of the map

I just downloaded 15.29 on my laptop and set it to low settings. I hope to experiment with higher settings soon enough.

The game seems to play fine right now, but when i move around the map, off to the side is black, as if there is no map there. Is that normal?

Are you moving around in map view, or walking around the world with your character?

You only "know" what your character has seen. In map view, the parts you've never seen are black.

Also, fwiw, taking a screenshot with Ubuntu's screenshot tool (i used a delay of 3 seconds to alt-tab back to the full-screen game) freezes the game. I can alt-tab at will and still walk around, but after the screenshot, neither moving nor tab works. I had to kill -9 the process.

I think you're doing the first scenario, right? Scenarios have finite sized maps, only the main game is infinite by default.

It's second map. I just wanted to know if the black on the side was normal. I'm quite new to the game.

It's normal for scenarios, yes.
The main game is infinite by default, but you can constrain one or both axis to be finite rather than infinite at map generation time if you like.
