Server WLAN issues

Post by Ghondo »

Hi together,

i just bought a 4 slot server for 0.15.x and it seems like I simply can't play on it via WLAN. It asks for the server password but after that it's always "waiting for server to save map" and "server not responding". Sometimes it seems like it is loading the map with 0.1 sec "Loading Multiplayer Map" (or something like that) but shortly after there is just a black screen with "server not responding" but no "waiting for server to save map". Reconnecting results in the first mentioned issue.
I tried it with my desktop pc via usb wlan stick and via laptop wlan (onboard) with the same result. Same with experimental and stable build (of course I switched builds on the server, too).

On the other hand if I connect my laptop via LAN there is no issue and I can play on the server no problem. Normally wouldn't matter to me but I do not have a 20 meter LAN cable to connect it to my desktop pc and it looks kinda stupid to sit in the middle of the hallway where the router is located.

I tried turning of my antivir with no result. Auto port forwarding the connection in the router didn't change anything. I'm running out of ideas what else to do. Googling didn't help much. Anything got a possible solution to fix this what seems like a WLAN issue?

Note: I don't have much experience in working with servers, just the normal stuff.

Data:
  • - Factorio 0.15.18
    - Server was automatically setup by the host, small changes in the "server-settings.json" to rename it.
relevant specs Desktop PC (the one I try to play on):
  • - Win 10 Pro 64 Bit
    - AVM FRITZ!WLAN Stick N (btw same results on other usb ports)
    - WLAN connection set to "private network"
Router: AVM Fritz!Box 7560
  • self port forwarding activated
    DNS: 8:8:8:8
5.0 GHz WLAN (same result on 2.4 GHz)

Sounds like your router is not port forwarding properly or is throttling UDP packets over wireless.

Is your WLAN on the same NAT? Same range of IP addresses as your LAN?

I would be curious to know if it worked over, say, a phone hotspot or from another physical location.

Tried manually setting the port forward to UDP 34197, still not working. ISP branded router so not too much options I think.

It's the same.

Working over mobile hotspot (pc to hotspot) but I don't have much data so not an option.

Is it possible that Windows has something to do with it?
Edit: Nevermind, hotspot worked just fine.

Will try with different router and ISP with my laptop at my parents place later on.

Its stop gap fix but if a true LAN connection is not available to you do to some setting in your router Hamachi or Tungle may help you play as a "LAN" game.

Ok found a temporary solution (updated to 0.15.19 btw):

I plugged in an older router (Fritz!Box 7170) via LAN to the "internet router" and connected my destop pc to the "proxy" via WLAN. No other settings needed, works like a charm.
Looks pretty stupid and my roommate will probably not be happy about it. Maybe gonna call the router manufacturer for a fix.

Open for other solutions.
