Play > Multiplayer.
One of you goes New game (or Load game if there is an existing one you want to resume)
Then generates the map (if revelant)
Then chooses a latency (can be set to less than 100 ms on a lan), autosage interval (if you want autosave)
Activate peer to peer
Click play
The others go in Connect to game
enter IP address of the one who has generated the map and port number with the following format : IP address:34197
Click on Connect.

So I just followed your steps, how would I test if this works or not using a single computer?

If you have problems setting up a simple LAN game between two computers, don't try : it's more complicated to play a lan game with yourself on your own computer than to setup a connection with another computer.

how do I set up that connection?, keep in mind i'm not a minecraft player or anything, I don't have any experience with this, all my use of multiplayer has been through matchmaking.
Edit*: do I need to reconfigure my router or anything, I'm running a 2015 airport extreme.
