I need to install Factorio 0.18 to migrate my old maps but I don't want to risk my main computer Factorio setup.

I am thinking of installing it on a Surface tablet with Bluetooth keyboard and mouse setup. Is it likely to work even if it turns out to be sluggish? All I plan to do is migrate the maps from 0.17 to 0.18 and save.

The specs:

Pentium 4425Y 1.7GHz
8 GB RAM
Windows 11 Home
Intel UHD Graphics 615
128 MB display memory

It will work, but using a 1.0.0 .zip install on the main machine is way more straight forward and won't touch your existing factorio installation.

Thank you. I just installed 1.0 on the tablet (0.18 was not available) and it works perfectly.

Next I will Google how to transfer the map save files, bring the files over, upgrade the maps to 1.0, transfer the maps back and upgrade them to the current version.

I do feel safer doing it this way.

A suggestion (although you seem to have done things differently): Create a new Windows account on your gaming PC and install Factorio from *.zip or from Steam. This way both Factorio saves and configuration reside on the same computer, but in different Windows user profiles.

In case you used Steam and the old save is synced with the Steam cloud, it will probably appear as save in your other user's save directory as soon as you start Factorio there, so it's a thing of installing Factorio 1.0 on the other user account, let it steam sync at start, load the save, save it with a new name, terminate and let Steam sync back. Then go to your primary account, start Factorio, let it steam sync at start, and your converted save should be there.
The only thing you need to make sure if you use Steam for syncing is that you only start Factorio once and never let it run simultaneously on different machines or user sessions. If you switch from one installation to the other, make sure any other running Factorio is terminated and the Steam cloud sync has actually finished.
