Sound stopped working (after 5+ years)

"Couldn't initialise Audio. Audio is disabled"

Been playing fine for 5+ years on the same PC. Three days ago, the sound stopped working. I googled this as well as I could, and have tried everything from fresh reinstall to chasing down "WASAPI can't initialise" bugs via stackoverflow.

This problem doesn't happen on my laptop.

Ok.

So what I had to do was do the control-click settings method INGAME, goto "the rest", scroll to "audio backend" set it to "allegro".

Changing it in the config file then saving/relaunching didn't "stick".

Thanks. I missed the control-alt settings option on the first readover.

For the change in the config.ini file to work, you would have also had to uncomment the line (remove the semicolon at the beginning). Glad you figured it out though. I know Donion is working as hard as he can to ensure compatibility across the board with the new audio backend.

What kind of audio setup do you use? How many channels and format (bit depth and sampling frequency)?
