[1.1.63] Low available space in Steam Remote Storage warning

When starting Factorio, the error "Low available space in Steam Remote Storage" began to appear.
"Steam Cloud" is disabled in global settings, and I have never turned it on

Is this a Factorio bug or is Steam having a problem? How to remove the error?

I wrote a request to Steam. Let's see what they say.

I am having this same issue. I have hundreds of different savegames for testing different mod loadouts and haven't used steam storage in a long time.

Independent of the actual cause, you can delete the cloud saves like so:
  • make a backup of the saves folder somewhere outside of factorio directory
  • activate cloud sync in steam settings (in general and for factorio)
  • start the game
  • delete THE CONTENTS of the original saves folder while the game is running in the background
  • close the game and let steam sync the empty folder to the cloud
  • after sync is complete, deactivate cloud sync (in general or just for factorio)
  • restore saves from backup
Could ofc still be that steam restores those files ignoring the setting as before.

I'm seeing the same issue. Not sure if this was always a problem with my Steam Cloud sync, and Factorio only started noticing after a recent update, or if something in a game update caused a problem on the Steam side.

Anyway, it looks like the Steam client and the Steam web UI don't agree on how much Factorio has stored on Steam. Based on Loewchen's comments above, I fixed it by deleting my saves folder locally (after making a backup) and forcing a Steam cloud sync. Full details at https://www.reddit.com/r/factorio/comme ... e_storage/

I'm having this issue as well since last week. On ver 1.1.61 currently.

I don't feel like fiddling around with files and restarting the game repeatedly and trying to find some random games. As long as it doesn't cause issues I'm ok with clicking the box, but it would be great to know if it's actually gonna be free of issues.

Steam cloud sync for Factorio is turned OFF everywhere I can find (1 place). Viewing Steam cloud data for Factorio shows just like 30 KB, some random settings, no saves, so it's not like it should be full to begin with or anything. Nothing has lots of data stored there anyway so the warning just fundamentally doesn't make sense at all with what the cloud viewer shows.

Factorio logfile says:
11.325 Steam Storage Quota: 106/4768
and that's the only entry on cloud storage.
Meanwhile Steam cloud viewer webpage says:
4 23.57 KB Show Files

Loewchen, your idea did work for the factorio message. Thanks.

However steam then started showing a message most of the time when I restarted the game that it had not successfully synced (again, sync is off everywhere). Likely a bug in steam, but maybe worth reporting it to steam?

Since I do a lot of modding, i restart the game constantly, so I switched to the download client on the website. This is fine for now, but I would like to switch back to steam for the integrations with steam at some point.

Steam just prompted an update for me, and one of the bug fixes listed was fixing an error about low storage space for games that do not have cloud saving fully enabled. Anyone with the issue might want to check for an update, and hopefully it's fixed.

Steam Cloud save file warning although Steam Cloud saving is generally disabled for all games

As the title sais. I received this warning Inside factorio after launching the game at a total filesize of ~ 4,5 GB for all my savefiles, although I am not using the Steam Cloud to save any of my games (generally disabled in steam settings). My saves are properly stored in my %appdata%/factorio/saves, and there is still plenty of space for more saves. I should not receive this warning for I am not using the steam cloud, I should not have to search desperately for a solution for 30 minutes until finding out all my saves are in fact locally stored and I should not have to write a report about it :)

Just leaving this here, gg,

For people that are affected by this, I'm curious what https://store.steampowered.com/account/remotestorage says that Factorio is storing.

I had this issue after I switched to a new OS and accidentally had cloud storage on when I installed Factorio at first. Even turning it off then still left me with the full remote storage in steam settings, despite the website I linked above only showing 6 save files from 2016, total size less than 300mb. I deleted the saves similar to the methodology that Loewchen mentioned, which solved the issue for me.

But it doesn't sound like you people here accidentally had your cloud storage on, so I am curious what the heck is in there according to Steam.

Dear Bilka,

I checked
https://store.steampowered.com/account/remotestorage
and Factorio is not even listed among the games in the Steam Cloud list. The total filesize of the game data in my Steam Storage there is just around 150 MB. My Factorio savegame data on my HDD in %appdata%/factorio/saves is 4,5 Gigabytes. Apparently the error message seems to think my local files are in the steam cloud.

EDIT: This error is permanent, and keeps reoccuring whenever starting the game.

UPDATE:
The game now crashes when I try to start it, it crashes to desktop at 95% of the orange loading bar. No further error messages or warnings. Unknown if this is linked to the previously described bug.

This totally hinders access to the game. I am locked out from playing and remain clueless.

I would suspect the log file would be needed to even begin to guess at the cause of the crash.

Thanks for the hint, FuryoftheStars. Here is my factorio-current.log. What catches my eye is that the "Local player-data.json" is "unavailable" while the "Cloud player-data.json" is "available", which might be linked to the original bug. I cant interpret it enough to detect why the game is crashing on startup, though. I checked the details by rightclicking the file and selecting properties, it said it was changed today, so it is actually linked to the problem: I tried to start the game today, but it only crashed.

factorio-current.log:

This issue has been resolved for me in the past few weeks. I'm not sure when exactly, but I no longer get the error message shown in the opening post. I'm not sure if it getting fixed coincided with an update of Steam (specifically, Steam, not Factorio on Steam). There was a note about something vaguely relevant in its changelog but I didn't check to make sure. (I normally don't click on "update now" for Steam as I assumed it would automatically update next day anyway, but I did click it this one time.)

So, as there are no seemingly erroneous warnings anymore, it feels like it's working correctly for me now.

For completeness sake, I'll post the relevant part from my most recent log, as an update to my original report. It's still essentially the same:
88.780 Steam Storage Quota: 113/4768

List of items on https://store.steampowered.com/account/remotestorage for Factorio. Again, unchanged since my original report:
achievements-modded.dat 2.59 KB 3 Sep, 2021 @ 4:38pm
achievements.dat 1.56 KB 3 Sep, 2021 @ 4:30pm
config.ini 23.53 KB 3 Sep, 2021 @ 4:30pm
player-data.json 14.56 KB 3 Sep, 2021 @ 4:54pm

Well, I deleted some savegames now, but the game still is not starting up. Crashing to desktop at 95% loading. I reinstalled. Still crashing, no hints how to fix this. I remain clueless.

I'm having this message show up again.

I'm not using steam cloud and only did used it a few week in 2016 before i realized it was active.

It occured before around the same time as this thread was opened, at that time i moved some of my old save files into a another archive folder and the message stopped appearing.

I thought it would do for the time steam fixes the problem.

Today it showed up again, presumably because i have added new save in my save folder due to playingthe game , that is NOT synced with steam cloud.

For people that are affected by this, I'm curious what https://store.steampowered.com/account/remotestorage says that Factorio is storing.
It says Factorio is storing around 200 MB of save game from 2016 and adding all other files from other game the total storage used is not even 500 MB.

I will have to try the method described by Loewchen, and i have left a ticket on steam.

After dealing with this problem for a while, I concluded that there is a bug in how steam Auto Cloud feature works. It will always report as "stored" whatever is currently in the autocloud folder (~/Factorio/saves for factorio) up to the quota (4.66GB total up to 250MB file size), even if the files aren't actually uploaded to the cloud. And when Factorio checks with steam cloud if there is enough space for blueprints, it will take into account these files and report that the space is running out. Which is either the bug in how factorio checks for free quota, or how steam reports free quota (probably the later).
