some help with entity update. screenshot provided

Post by napouser »

so here is the entity update

if u do some calculations total is around 10000

however when grouped says 18000 ms

am i missing something?

i am not asking about the total break down 26

i am asking about entity update thats why i put a circle in it in big red

that says 18000

now if u take the next screenshot that analyzes all that and u add them all together

u get somewhere around 10000 ms

its mostly inserters 5 mining 1 assemblers 1 smelters 0.5 robos 2 etxc etc all around 10 000

so how is it possible it all rounds up to 10000 and entity update is 8000 more than that?

where is the 8000 coming from?

The entity update times shown are for the surface you're currently on. For modded that can be multiple surfaces.

Looking into it more, entity update also includes force-conditionally-active entities (turrets) so if you have a lot of turrets shooting at things or near things that would also be added into that.

For 1.2 I merged all of the per-entity times so it shows all surfaces.

Hmmm no machine guns but i have about 100 000 lasers and at least 20 of them are firing at any given time since the base is about 50000 tiles worth of perimeter

However i am pretty sure i disabled pollution and the zerg stopped attacking when i took screenshots and save.

Also turrets say only 0,77 ms in the screenshot.

Also yesterday was looking at it again with 15 fps base is running at 50000 ms and entity update only has stuff adding up to 30000. Again there is a 40% deficit somewhere

Entity update is just entities. There are a lot more things that take time also listed in the show-time-usage section.

yes i understand that
let me rephraze then

u press f4 and see updates

lets say u got a base with 65000 total updates
50000 of them are entity updates

press f4 again remove time updates go to entity updates only

u start counting each one and come to a total of 30000

is there something wrong here is this a bug or everything working as intended?

That is the turrets thing. Not all turrets are in the per-entity-update-times; some are only active when there are enemies nearby to be shot at.

ok removed pollution removed zerg and removed all 16k lazers on the map
36000 ups
entity update 21000
counting individually all entities inside entity time usage sums up around 17000

still a difference of 20%-25% much less than 40%

i am on a laptop but when i come back home i will run some more tests with editor removing entities until i find out what the hell is cauzing this difference

Keep in mind, all the stats listed there were more so for the devs to use that they made available to us. Also, they are ultimately just stats… they don’t have any actual affect on the end result aside from a possible slowdown for the extra code it runs when enabled (ie, even if the total entity update time is X while it reports Y, the game itself is still only taking X).

I’m saying all of this because I’m not sure this all is worth the effort you’re currently putting into it. ;)

All of the times are accurate (none of them are ever too big or too small) simply: each time is measuring a specific thing. And the name is a few words so it doesn't convey what all it measures. Not every time is measuring everything someone might think it is and because two might have similar names doesn't mean they are measuring the same exact things.

I removed all the zerg and pollution completely off with the console commands

Understandable but the idea here is that somehow i will manage to find some secret bug and somehow the devs will moraculasly fix it and magically my base will go from 20fps to 60. One can always dream

well after several tests without any aliens i think the turrents account for an extra 25% there is still a 15% disparity thats unaccounted for in the f4 logs
