Hello,

I am experiencing very slow downloads from the internet. I am trying to download the Mac version and it is running at 150 KB/s. I have gigabit internet and nothing else is slow except this site. Is there something on my side that is causing this?

probably the same problem causing my download issues from the mod portal (OpenSSL errors / connection closed early)

Glad it is not just me! I tried from various Macs and Windows systems. I even used my phone's hotspot. Still slow.

same, it seems to be a regional thing. I downloaded mods through my server in Quebec (i'm on the west coast) and it worked fine for that.

What do you think the issue might be? Are there any concerns of letting it download at now 40 kbps? Its not directing to some malicious server is it?

Is there any way to get in touch with the devs about the CDN issue i have? viewtopic.php?p=408576#p408576

I have internet over the biggest company in germany: telekom. my ip is giving back that im from germany, still i get most times a US Server over your CDN.

This is probably the problem which i have while downloading mods, updates and even the whole game (1,2gb).

Slow speeds mostly under 100kbs, for mods most under 20kbs (srsly). "many" disconnects and reconnects. Very anoying.

A fix would be to put my ip range under "germany" (if thats not the case) ( 93.243.197.128 - 93.243.197.207) or give us the ability to static select where we want to download from. (like select it ingame, and (or) under profile at the factorio site)

Can you try bypassing the DNS loadbalancer and directly download the release?

First: ensure you're logged in on factorio.com.
Then download the 1.1.50 release directly from one of the links below:

You can do this currently for any download url by
  • right click on the download button for the release -> Copy Link
  • open new tab and paste link in url bar
  • append ?cdn=us1.factorio.com for US cdn server
    or append ?cdn=eu1.factorio.com
    or append ?cdn=jp1.factorio.com
  • press enter -> a download should start

Appending the download link with ?cdn=us1.factorio.com resulted in a 52 MB/s download speed so it finished in around a minute this time! Looks like there might be some CDN issues?

for me, all of them result in terrible throughput, at about 6kB/sec.

can you please try downloading with ?cdn=cdn.factorio.com this proxies the request through cloudflares network

that works much better, about 80-450kB/sec but when downloading updates through Steam, I see 3.2MiB/sec, my max throughput.

nevermind.

here's a graph of the I/O on the NIC and a screenshot of the download rate having dropped to 6.4kB/sec.

there's some major bursts up to 800kB/sec, at least there were for the first 30M. now it's like Dialup speed. I doubt it'll finish, it'll probably timeout.

as i'm not the only person living in BC, I imagine there's more people who experience this

BC as in British Columbia? To troubleshoot this further I would like you to do some network path testing with a tool like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MTR_(software) or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PathPing

Could you please do traces for us1.factorio.com, eu1.factorio.com, jp1.factorio.com, mods-data.factorio.com and cdn.factorio.com

Reports of these tools are a bit verbose and contain somewhat private information (IPs of your home network, ISP gateway, etc) so feel free to send them to support@factorio.com instead of posting them here.

judging from the rtt in the traceroutes there could be congestion in the gtt part of your network path. with pathping or mtr you would also get packet loss statistics to better pinpoint the bad nodes.

unfortunately it's not time-based, there's no off-peak time when download mods has worked, this performance is always bad. perhaps they're pulling underhanded tactics to try and convince a network to peer with them. makes no sense to me.

I don't really trust the results from MTR. It's easy to see BS results by just pointing it at a LAN address with no packet loss according to ping, yet it reports arbitrary values in the UI of MTR from 24-84% loss. I guess the 1980s can keep their network diagnostics tools.

Well you're of course entitled to your opinion ;) I've had quite some success troubleshooting networking issues with mtr. Unfortunately there's not much I can do for you at the moment. In next weeks/month we'll evaluate and migrate to some new CDN provider. Maybe then you'll get better download speeds.

I am having the same problem when trying to download mods from the mod portal (in-game and the website).
Wouldn't be a problem If the downloads didn't cancel when they got too slow :/

Using pathping I get these results:

Uh, do the downloads from inside Factio cancel too ?

What about using a dedicated download program ?
