[1.1.32] Odd situation where not able to kill Behemoth Worm

I am afraid I can't reproduce this as it was in the middle of a firefight, but hopefully the explanation will be enough to go off.
I was clearing out some nests, and I was about to kill the last worm, but all of a sudden it seemed like my gun jammed. I pressed fire repeatedly and nothing happened. It was down to very low health - I can't give an exact level, but all the bar was grey.
I was definitely close enough and pointing in the right direction (ran up to head butt it just to make sure!) and I definitely had ammo - 180+ uranium rounds in a submachine gun - game is all stock. I was definitely still able to use my gun to kill trees, as well as the next group of enemies i found.
Very few seconds later, it was killed by long range artillery (many seconds flight time from closest gun). I am assuming something weird happened with the artillery saying "my kill - you can't have this one", but it doesn't sound like desired behaviour!
