[1.1.22] Game hangs during biter attack (early game)

I was playing Factorio with no mods and with only a small starter factory (a few assemblers, 1 steam engine, a few turrets). During a biter attack the game hung with no obvious reason as to what caused it. This was after a few waves occurred and was after about an hour or two of play or so, with no previous crashes during this run. I am not sure how to reproduce the crash, it seems intermittent/situational. The map was newly generated in this game version if that matters.
