When trying to attach a rail to an existing one further away it says "Can't reach" -> (1) . But if you press shift -> (2) , click once ->(3) and then release shift ->(4), you can place real rails very far away.

This is more a user friendliness thing from what I understand. The sheer size of rail setups and the restrictions on turn size mean that without this mechanic it would be way harder to build.
That said, I could accept something like 4x range for rail building as reasonable. And yes, the inconsistant range is.... Inconsistant.

you were already able to do that, though you were not able to start this type of rail planning via map-view.
i would suggest only being able to start placing ghosts if you cant reach the start yourself.
if you can reach the strart yourself then the only restriction is how far you can see, as it was before.
also this is duplicated by

This seems to have only started in a very recent update.
I am probably going to regret asking for this to be fixed, as I am finding it useful, but I am afraid that for balance purposes it seems like far too overpowered a tool.
The ability to build infinite length rails as long as you are near the starting point is slightly different - it is much more limited in it's usefulness and far less overpowered - therefore not such a priority to fix IMO.

I do believe this is already reported (and assigned to kovarex)
