[0.12.12] Crash on lua errors

Hello with version 0.12.12 the game crashes for me whenever a lua error is encounterd.
I have gradually tested different older versions and 0.12.6, 0.12.10 and 0.12.11 still trow error messages giving some indication what went wrong and in case of console commands keep the game running, so this was introduced with something changed for 0.12.12. I am running Debian testing and the 64Bit builds.
One example is calling this from the console (mods folder empty):
/c game.findentities{area={{-1, -1}, {1, 1}}}
<0.12.12: error message that I use the command wrong
0.12.12: crash with quiet meaningless logfile #1
Another is trying to run the mod homeworld which has not been adapted to the changes in 0.12.11
<0.12.11: mod seem to work
0.12.11: error screen on game start that the mod wants to address 'game'
0.12.12: crash with quiet meaningless logfile #2
