Rail world biters vanilla settings and a story

Medium-sized island with just enough resources to "tech-break" out of it. I have almost a 1000 hours in Factorio, but most of it has been spent polishing the cannon-ball on an end-game mega bases in peaceful mode; I watched a few Anti-Elitz speed runs and wanted to see if I could actually beat the game in 8 hours with biters turned on, and this easily defensible island seemed to be the way to do it. Ha! Twenty hours of epic floundering and misadventures later and I still wonder if I will go the way of the lost colony. You must try this map! I would recommend the mod "Long Reach" as it allows you to place land fill dots at a distance (for connecting pipes to the mainland). I used no other mods.
Here is a little narrative of how it went for me:

I ran out of coal just I researched land fill, steel, and flamethrower, so grabbed 3 stacks of miners (all I had), made a little land bridge and wall-papered the nearest coal patch with miners. Massive overkill but I figured it was the most efficient – what the hell I was there already why not? I put up a little wall and all my flamethrowers and a gun turret or two and started stitching some pipes to an area with two oil resources. The little alarm went off to say some stuff was getting eaten but I took an extra 30 seconds to lay down some pumps and minimal defenses there before running back. It was a scene of total carnage: Acres of burnt and crumpled miners, all lovingly hand-crafted, all my flamethrowers, toast. A few stragglers were still munching on transport belts. I never saw this animation before but my little dude literally took off his heavy armor, sat on it and sobbed for like 20 seconds. I had no way to make iron without coal (unless I wanted to play Paul Bunyon for 30 minutes), and no way to make miners without iron. Well not quite … I grabbed a few burner borers I had from the start at the base and came back – after wearing out three pairs of sneakers I had a dozen electric miners in and the steam plant running again. By this time the biters had discovered the two-pump station and by removing my only source of oil disabled my effective defense for the coal base. I ran over to fix it and discovered I had no steel left to make jack pumps. And of course the minute I was gone they went right to the coal base defended with a few weak-sauce gun turrets and flamethrowers that had no oil. It was pre-meditated it had to be! I had to find the queen because these bastards were really starting to p* me off.
Eventually I made a few batteries and laser turret creeped around the perimeter of my pollution cloud. That took forever but seemed to help … them! After an hour of peace I had bigger biters attacking my base, so I make a double thickness Great Wall connecting the iron and stone mine, put Matt Damon and General Li on the Western Turret and went back to trying to set up some smelters. It has been like this for 20 hours: three steps forwards two back, just now with the science lab up and mass produced laser turrets I am thinking I can beat this game – that is until I discover the tunnel I am sure they are building to my nuclear plant…

Mind you I haven't attempted this in 0.15 with the new science. Actually I've barely played Factorio at all lately ^^;

Nice starting position for early "Tower defense" game with agressive creep.

Starting at small peninsula at south, largest attack come from south-west (7 o'clock) where you can build towers accross the watter to shoot incaming biters.
Enough coal, just enough copper and iron for the start. Once base is established, you can expand slightly to the North for good oil and quite large uranium deposits.
Then there are more resources to the east (about 2M copper and 1.5M of iron with more iron to the North and South from this position).
Huge patch of Uranium is on perfectly defendable position to the North with more oil if needed. (I use train there and bring acid in fluid wagon.)

I have an interesting map, where you start with a somewhat limited resources and have to expand far in search for more (low frequency, big and rich patches). You start on a big peninsula with no biters in the immediate vicinity - what you'll have to take care of eventually are two small, easily defensible land bridges - one is to the south-west near the oil and opens up to a big patch of land, the other one to the east opens up to a wider stretch of land limited on the sides by two seas, connecting the land near the oil land bridge and uncharted territories farther east. The third bit at the south isn't connected. The peninsula is big enough for a main bus strategy, at least for a while (I've run out of place at around high tech science production, but it could be done better with different layout). If you're feeling creative, try not to leave this area for the whole game - except for Oil, for which you'll have to step a bit out, every resource is present within the area.

This is one of my maps that I have found amazingly fun to play but a fair warning it can be challenging. It features an island start and you have to migrate towards a mainland with strong biter presence to reach an oil field (further to the north on the mainland) that will allow you to build and expand your factory. The diffculty is in reaching that oilfield before the biters become too strong to handle without oil based equipment.

This map is playtested on default (no mods) death-world marathon settings.

This starting area is great for a marathon death world, minus the biters in your base.. ;)
I did come up with a fishy solution and laid claim to it, but with 5 spawners and a dozen worms they put up a hell of a fight. Good luck!

I have an interesting map, where you start with a somewhat limited resources and have to expand far in search for more (low frequency, big and rich patches). You start on a big peninsula with no biters in the immediate vicinity - what you'll have to take care of eventually are two small, easily defensible land bridges - one is to the south-west near the oil and opens up to a big patch of land, the other one to the east opens up to a wider stretch of land limited on the sides by two seas, connecting the land near the oil land bridge and uncharted territories farther east. The third bit at the south isn't connected. The peninsula is big enough for a main bus strategy, at least for a while (I've run out of place at around high tech science production, but it could be done better with different layout). If you're feeling creative, try not to leave this area for the whole game - except for Oil, for which you'll have to step a bit out, every resource is present within the area.
