It would be nice to make a mod which would be underground power lines

Currently making such mod would be quite hard. Why? Factorio doesen't have underground plain and the only entities that alow undergound passages (pipes, conveyors) are limited to horizontal or vertical directions.

How would it work? Are we talking basically power poles but you can safely drive over them? Or something more unusual, like having the ability to build on top of them? Or just an asymmetrical powered area, such as a long straight line?

wires underground. to the electricity supply, I saw such wires in our city instead of the tops, and European cities wires go underground. and so there is nothing unusual.

...Sure, but I meant in game terms. You have to place them with your mouse, how do they look and work?

You can create "power pole" that will deliver power in 1x1 radius but it will block ability to build on that tile - there will be no point in it. Power pole prototype can not be non-blocking = it will always block buildings on tile it does exist, so it kills any reasonable way of creating it (1x1 square, 3x1 rectangle). You can request new entity flag ("non-blocking" or "non-solid") or option from developers (like "solid = false" or "blocking = false") and then it will be possible.

You can create entities off grid and if it is a 1x1 collision box it should fit in the small gaps between buildings.

Sure. Here is a mod that adds small offgrid electric poles. These can be placed between some buildings like so:

We know what underground wires are in real life, thank you.

Isn't that exactly what we already have? The poles connect to each other and power everything else in a radius (underground)?

Would it not be easier to just add electrification to the belts, so in fact a standard conveyor belt with build in (underground) cables? Much easier to make and it keeps a clean look.

From users point of view - probably.
From modders point not that hard but I wouldn't call it easy.

Why not add another substation(which is basically a power-pole) with a much bigger underground-radius?!
