I assume the devs found a bug in it before release and therefore didn't release it?

No, the post body says 27 and the post title says 28. This is a typo, not an intentional version skip.

EDIT: Except if FactorioBot is actually a bot (and why wouldn't it be?) how did it accomplish a typo?

It's not a typo. What you see is 0.17.27 changelog, with a critical bugfix added on the very top (0.17.28).

Right, the top bug "Fixed a crash when hovering over some inventory-like GUI elements." must have been caught just after release of .27. It sounds pretty bad, so I guess they took it down immediately, and put out a fix.

Factory machinery now produces correct sign for pollution, but trees appear to be now polluting, a reversion from the 0.17.26

Something was goofy on .17.26 with pollution not spreading. What ever was done on this patch, pollution now spreads as expected. This is in addition to patch note regarding pollution.

i think that if 0.17.27 wasn't released publicly, there's no reason to call the updated version ".28" - just like you didn't iterate every version you created during the year between last 0.16.x and 0.17.0. it just causes mild confusion and wastes everyone's time.

Stable updates for desktop went from 73.0.3683.86 to 73.0.3683.103.

But hey, I guess they don't know how to version either :)

Of course they do! Google can't do anything wrong, ever. It's like when mail from your mail server is marked as spam by Gmail, it must be your fault, google can't be wrong at that scale! Or when google doesn't like your site for some reason and it doesn't rank well in search results, must apply better SEO!

Chrome does all the branching/builds/numbering automatically without a human driving it, and then humans decide which things to release later :)

looks like trees still contribute to positive pollution (at least in pollution stats screen)

Finally a "somewhat stable" version. From version 0.17.22 to 0.17.26 there was at least one regression issue per version that made it much worse than 0.17.21 (e.g. crashes when placing poles, mods compatibility issues, ugly localized fonts, broken pollution) but now i hadn't find any game breaking or UX-degrading bugs, the only one found was tree pollution sign, but it's purely visual and doesn't affect game at all (still regression, but very minor and fixed in next release). Nice job! I hope, next releases will be free from regressions too.

It is purely visual bug, i tested with /editor - added a big amount of trees to previously polluted chunk and this chunk was quickly cleaned from pollution (at least, turned from red to transparent on minimap). But in statistics window, counted as pollution production.

Trees were showing as pollution absorbing in the last patch, it was only the machinery that was flipped in .26

At least as the others mentioned, this appears to be a purely cosmetic error and doesn't appear to affect gameplay mechanics.

It depends how far 0.17.27 got in the release. Maybe it got far enough to make problems if 0.17.28 would now be called 0.17.27. Better then to just "skip" the version.
Greetings, Nova.

But it was! I distinctly remember seeing the announcement on the forum, just before I went over to the super market to grab some beer for the evening. About half an hour later, I fired up my non-working version of Factorio to check out whether updating to 0.17.27 would help, but got a message that there were no updates available. I frantically searched the forums for any post mentioning 0.17.27 and almost thought I must have lost my mind, or misread something. Only when 0.17.28 was released later on I realized that they had, indeed, published 0.17.27 and must have deleted it almost immediately. Should have made a screenshot of that first posting. Well, such is life, just an accumulation of missed chances … :-D
A good mod deserves a good changelog. Here's a tutorial (WIP) about Factorio's way too strict changelog syntax!

Yep, the patch notes for 0.17.27 were on the forum for a short moment. I read them, launched the game (but no update), and when I came back the 0.17.27 thread was gone. According to my browser history from yesterday, the 0.17.27 thread used to be located at viewtopic.php?f=3&t=69269.

Knowing for sure now that I've not been imagining things. Apart from that, I guess it's quite pointless to draw out that discussion any longer. :-)
