It's not mandatory you update for every versions.

Not everyone uses steam for Factorio (i don't because i don't want to see how many hours i have played :P )
Doesn't change the fact that you don't need to download the most recent update every time it's posted. With these small incremental updates the only reason to do so is to fix a bug you're having, verify a bug you're having is still happening in the most recent build, and accurately report a bug once you've done once of the above two.

No bugs, no need to update, almost every time.

Yeah, we don't *need* to download the latest experimental so we can help find and report all the latest and greatest bugs. Factorio is probably fine.

This update broke something. When trying to join a server I and my friend get the following weirdness:

I have the same thing

Same thing for me. Mods are on the server and in the same time are not.

Maybe this fix broke something?
# Fixed that the game would incorrectly think some mods wouldn't be required when joining multiplayer games even though they are.

If it was that important to them to get bug reports from the (likely tiny percentage of the player base that are) direct downloaders who for whatever reason won't download every version because of the updater, they'd probably more highly prioritize fixing the updater.

As in the link of the ticket I opened, Rseding91 said it was corrected and will roll out in 17.8. They'll try to put it fast

Obviously the first version that fixes the situation still has to be downloaded so the warning is still there in version 17.8. But I don't see it mentioned in the fixes list.

The frequency of fixes/updates is awesome, but is there any chance you could focus on fixing that updater next week?
Pretty please with cherries on top?
They might not like cherries. They did like the bag of dicks though.
That was a funny story - I laughed for like an hour after reading that

As far as I can remember, they've had probes with the autoupdater every time a new fix came in every version since 0.14 or 0.15

I would have the luxury of downloading the full version zip file on Thursdays evening GMT+2, when, I think, everyone is the US is just waking to work so I didn't have much problems or just prepared and had dinner until it came down. I could also leave it running at night and start enjoying it Friday morning when I didn't work Fridays...
