The research should be no longer shared even in the mod.
This is correct, my PvP mod doesn't have shared research.

But you might need to remove certain lines from the control.lua so that research isn't unlocked automatically straight away.

I think if we're getting different team support in 0.12 It would be a good idea to implement some sort of diplomacy settings, so factions can be allies, neutral and enemies. I might make some PvP games pretty interesting if allegiances can shift around during the game.

That is the Gameplay with my Little Brother, i do Research and Economic and my Brother Build Build Build Units and if we 2 Minutes from the WIN away, he declares war on me Defeadet me and the Enemy. That didn't makes me Angry its my Brother and it is Normal :D.

11.22 was a really great update to the game and the devs worked really hard on it. Things have been really stable & great. It's given me lots of great time building factories & learning how to record. This is definitely a great branch & I'll be playing it with mods for a while yet even after .12
