Started the game up with no mods. Once the main menu loaded, I pressed play. The game crashed imitatively.

I think that this is the problem, the same one that the user in this thread had.

First make sure you are using the most recent version of RivaTuner Statistics Server. Using the Steam launch option --force-d3d and updating the graphics drivers also helped somewhat, but it still crashed from time to time. Disabling or removing RTSS finally worked.
