Just for a quick update about this problem.
I just received my activation code for the alpha (thank you ^__^) so I quickly downloaded it for a check before going to sleep and noticed the exact same error message with the zip version (with the installer it runs just fine).
I don't think I'm the only one trying this version, but I don't see why it wouldn't work just for me either.

I wasn't able to reproduce it, but.
A) This could have something to do with different users installing the same application, path problems, I did rewrite big part of the path system, there is big chance it will all work correctly now.
B) I added information about the path the system tried to open the icon at, so it should be easier to find out what is going on next time (after the 0.2.8)
