What's the first game you played with crafting?

For me it was Thief 2, The Metal Age. The missions at the end had machinery and you could make health potions and flash bombs and other things. You had to look for things and remember stuff. I was not amused but it grew on me a little.

***EDIT***
THREE PART QUESTION

Whats the first game you played with any kind of crafting, such as in Resident Evil with the plants?

What's the first game you played with separate machines to craft items? Example - Thief 2

What's the first game you played that was almost totally focused on crafting like Terraria?

Asking a "What's the first game...?" type of question is just another way to say "How old are you?", lol.

I thought about it and it's hard to remember. I know I crafted in Everquest, but I had been playing PC games for more than a decade before that, so I'm not sure if there was crafting in old games like Might and Magic or Ultima.

Iirc, it was something called Mysterium :) Well wasn't really crafting, but quite close.

"System Shock" was the first that I distinctly remember for me but "Arcanum of Steamworks and Magick Obscura" was my favorite crafting game until Factorio.

hmm...hard to say.

Either Ultima Online or Runescape when it was new.
But I had also beta tested several other mmorpgs around that time so could have easily been something else.
Can't even remember the names of most of them. Some are still around (like Anarchy Online) many others have closed.

After Thief 2, I didn't bother with crafting until I got Terraria, my first crafting centered game. Far as I know there weren't any crafting games until Terraria. My favorite thing was orchestrating massive floods by linking underground lakes and dousing lava.

Do count games, which purpose is another than crafting, but has some crafting in it (eg mixing plants for potions and spells or such)?

If so I would think 'Magic of Endoria' (C64 Version)

But I dig deeper in my memory, because the C64 was not my first computer :).

WoW was my first, too. Then Minecraft came, with all it's mods, and i found myself crafting more than actually playing.

I suppose this should be a two part thread.

What's the first game you played with any kind of crafting? Resident Evil would be included because you had to mix a couple of plants once in awhile.

Part 2 - What's the first real crafting game you played that focused on crafting? For me that would have been Terraria. You pretty much have to build everything in Terraria.

Three parts!

Thief 2 actually had several different types of machines that created this or that object. This is a step up from crafting on your person like in Resident Evil but it is not as advanced as Factorio where you have to build the machines and there are dozens of different machines and parts.

Minecraft was the first, now almost every game I play involves a crafting system of some sort.
