Bugs that are actually features.

[0.17.68] Logistic system item stacking

Post by DaveMcW »

I have 5 storage chests in my logistic system. They have a bunch of junk in them, but currently no red science packs. I deconstructed my research factory, resulting in 19 red science packs being added to the logistic system.

Expected result:
All 19 red science packs go to the same storage chest.

Actual result:
4 red science packs go to the bottom right storage chest, 15 red science packs go to the storage chest next to it.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Load this save:
Logistic science pack bug.zip
(510.81 KiB) Downloaded 39 times
2. Type /editor to resume time.
3. Watch where the red science packs go.

This is a minor issue, but I am trying to optimize my storage chest slots so it is annoying me a lot.

Maybe items are seen as different, if they are used up differently (green bar of the science pack)

I am pretty sure that is the cause. You had 15 partially used science packs in your complex and 4 unused ones. Correct? Partially used or damaged items go to their separate stack.

However, looking at your screenshot, I would not know where those 15 partially used red science would come from, if that lab is the only lab. There must have been 15 labs for that to happen.

Update: I was able to reproduce this with batteries, so it is not specific to tool items.

AFAIK, it's not a bug.

When construction robot picks up item to store in network it works as follows (if I remember correctly, it was in one of FFF):
1) get all non-full chests with picked item in it
2) if there are none, get all non-full chests whose filters don't block item from placing in it
3a) if there is none, spawn "not enough space in logistic storate" notification
3b) otherwice get one from list and move item there

It can be first chest in list (with undefined order) or random chest in list -- I don't remember details.

Therefore, it's not strange when items get splitted between different chests.

Robots will also deliver items to chests if the chest has ever had that item in it before.
If you want to get ahold of me I'm almost always on Discord.

Thanks for the info. My use case is repeatedly filling and emptying stoage chests, so it seems they are doomed to become fragmented like an old hard drive.

Maybe I can exploit this by initializing storage chests with items in a configuration that is unlikely to fragment. Or just deconstruct the storage chests each cycle.
