In my attached savegame (Screenshot also attached), I'm removing some trees with construction robots (east of where I'm standing). But they put the wood in a storage chest far away from the construction side: I've read that they should choose the nearest storage chest that already contains wood, so I would expect them to put the wood in the chest next to where I'm standing in the savegame, not to the one ~40 tiles to west and 10 to the north.

Is this a bug or intended behavior?

Thanks for the report. This is working as intended: robots will pick the first chest in the set of what ever chests have non-full stacks of the item(s) they want to get rid of. They don't account for distance past that or if there are other chests closer with non-full stacks of the same items.
