[0.14.7] FPS/UPS decrease, jumps increasing and huge lag

I have a computer with these specs:

Core I5 2450-M, 2.5GHz
8 GB RAM
240 GB SSD
NVIDIA 540M

When I start attacking the biters, a HUGE lag starts to happen. The FPS drops from 60 to ~4 to ~5.

I got no anti virus, no bloatware and only windows 10 + steam + factorio running.

Factorio is using your integrated graphics:

Code: Select all

   0.260 Available display adapters: 1
   0.260  [0]: \\.\DISPLAY1 - Intel(R) HD Graphics 3000 {0x8000005, [0,0], 1366x768, 32bit, 60Hz}
   0.260 Create display on adapter 0. Size 1280x720 at position [33, 6].
   0.983 Initialised Direct3D:[0] Intel(R) HD Graphics 3000; driver: nvumdshimx.dll 21.21.13.7270
   1.000 Video memory size (dedicated video/dedicated system/shared system/available): 978/0/4051/4092 MB

I just put --force-opengl and the same thing is happening.

I see no difference switching from graphics cards...

Make a screenshot with show_time_used_percent activated as well.

It sounds like your laptop is throttling its self maybe due to heat generated.

Do you have it plugged in and is it on "power savings" mode or "performance" mode?

Can you check the CPU temperature before and during one of the lag spikes? Using something like Speccy: https://www.piriform.com/speccy

Also, I meant in Windows. When you click the battery icon on the bottom right of your screen it gives options for what power mode you want to use: http://imgur.com/a/fi3Ld

Its on High performance already (aka Alto desempenho)

And the CPU/Motherboard is burning... :(

Check event viewer on your computer and see if it lists CPU throttling due to temperature under the system events. I'll bet it is.

I would start with cleaning out the fan and cooling fins then.

Thanks for your help! I have to buy a better laptop!

You may be able to clean out your current one which might fix the temperature issue(s). That is, if you're comfortable doing that. If not, and you know anyone who is they might be able to do it for you :)

I've been having similar problems recently. At 86°C the CPU starts throttling to prevent it from heating up even more. At 103°C the laptop would shut down, keeping only the fans running at max speed, in which case the laptop won't start again until the power-cord and batteries have been removed for a while. Unfortunately, my laptop's cooling fan was already clean and spinning properly, so cleaning it any further didn't help.

Of course, playing in a cooler area, putting your laptop on a cooling stand (I'm using 4 tape rolls) and making sure that the air is flowing properly through your laptop helps, but probably won't be enough.

It seems that your NVIDIA graphics card is being used somewhere, as it is at 66°C. As you are not using it for factorio, you might want to turn it off completely, so your laptop fan only needs to cool your CPU. This could easily reduce your CPU temperature by about 10-20°C. I'm not sure how to do that in Windows, though.

It might be the case that the cooling paste between your CPU/GPU and the cooling element has dried out. If you dare taking apart your laptop completely and don't mind breaking it permanently, then you can consider replacing the cooling paste.
