[0.12.0-0.12.1] non-fast Insert can't grab items on belts

Neither the insert nor the burner insert can grab the piece of copper ore from the belt. It goes past them before they finish grabbing it.

What can grab that piece:
* Long handed inserters
* Fast inserters
* Normal inserters if I put them in the place where the burner inserter is.

This only happens if items are spread far apart, if they are closer then the insert goes for the first item, but ends up grabbing the second.

How did I notice this: I was building a belt feed for my turret defenses.

Well, this is the result of the physical possibilities of the inserters, I don't consider it a bug.

I believe this is not working as it should and the inserter should be able to pick the item in that situation.

I would agree if the belt was an upgraded belt, but this is tier 1 inserters being used on tier 1 belt. They should work in any configuration, otherwise it only serves to limit creative potential and add to the edge cases "well you can't do this because that". This takes away from the fun and for that reason alone it should be considered a bug.

This shouldn't happen. It never happened in the previous version. Basically, burner inserter can not grab things, like coal, from the corner of the belt. I notice this while making my tutorial video for Uranium Power. It is quite disconcerting.

This build is viable on 0.11.22 but not on current 0.12

Red box is where inserter fails to grab the coal, lying on the other side of the bend. On 0.11.22, it grabbed them just fine.

It is not a bug in the code (actually the reason why it worked before could have been a bug in the code) but I agree that functionally the basic / burner inserter should be able to grab anything from the basic belt. So moved this to minor issues.

I noticed this too on corners in the demo, but something interesting I saw was that if two items on the belt were next to each other then the inserter would go after the first one, not be able to get it, then go for and be able to pick up the second one. I'll test and see if a constant stream works. Probably something to do with how the game handles inside corners. Didn't you guys update the corner belts so they were faster/didn't get stuck so easily?

It fails with first item or if there are gaps.
I'm encountering this regularly on belts feeding ammo from chest to guns. Especially on tile where fast inserter takes out the items from chest - basic inserter will not pick up anything from this tile until belt fills up with items.

I'm finding that fast inserters also have this same problem when it comes to red belts. It'll go for the first item and not be able to get it, but it can get a second one if it's right behind the first.

It's an issue with all of them actually. They tend to sacade when the belt is not fully compressed. So normal inserted will sort of twitch/sacade on a regular belt, fast inserters will do the same on an expressed belt. The effect is most pronounced on grabbing items off the belt. Placing items on the belt is less of a problem since the inserters can remain extended over the belt until a slot opens up.
