The inserter throws the asteroids into space instead of inserting them into the adjacent collector. I assume this is because the front of the collector doesn't sit on platforms. Inserters should be able to interact with the yellow bounding box for the sake of consistency and clarity.

you can't insert item in asteroid collectors

You cannot insert items into asteroid collector. If this would be possible then asteroid collectors would effectively become chests of the space platform. Since they are not considered as valid drop target, inserter continues searching what to do with the item and finds a space tile instead which makes it throw the item out.
