Factoriopedia lists the engineer as a valid crafting source for space science packs, the engineer however isn't able to hold items in his inventory or craft items whilst in the conditions required on a space platform.

Moving the character to a platform with the editor does allow the character to craft them. Credits to Wizord on the community discord for testing.
