How does priority work?

Prio 1 is everywhere the highest priority in the real world.
Can you please make an explaination without "highest priotity".

Suggestion: Largest number gets used first.

Higher NUMBER = higher priority.
Default Priority is 0.
Negative priorities are supported as well.
