Tileable Nuclear Reactor Design

Post by papercrane »

Since 0.15 came out I've been working on making a nice nuclear reactor design and have wanted to have an easily tileable design (i.e. 2 rows of reactors next to each other for maximum bonuses). My first setup was inefficient but worked well until the heat pipes were nerfed. My second design works very well but is still inefficient with regard to the amount of power each reactor produces.

My third design attempts to use as much of each reactor's power generating potential while still staying easily tileable. This design keeps all of the heat exhcangers, heat pipes, water/steam pipes, and steam turbines within the footprint of a reactor so it should theoretically be tileable infinitely. I've put in some pumps for the steam and water and made space for roboports so it can be put down via blueprint and left to build.

There are two input water pipes which need somewhere between 1 and 2 water pumps. I was testing it with 2 water pumps per row but it should work with less. Each row also has two steam pipes which are swapped at one point to keep the row as short as possible. It also uses pumps to keep the steam moving. (My previous design had used a pump for the steam and was supporting more heat exchangers and steam turbines than it theoretically should have, so I kept them in this design.)

At full power utilization all of the steam turbines are at full power generation potential except for two (one each for each of the 2 steam pipes).

Here's a screenshot of the design for a single reactor. Note that this is assuming that the reactor has 3 neighbors.

And here's a screenshot of the design with 62 reactors. There are only roboports every 10 reactors:

And a blueprint for 22 reactors. This one has roboports on only one row, making it tileable with minimal roboports by overlapping one row.

Nice! Let me quote my own post from a while ago (I've built simillar setup, but a tiny bit more compact):

Below there are pictures of unit stacked from _two_ 2x4 setup tiles. To pipe water to more than 2 units you need some fiddling with underground pipes and moving turbines further away, but it's entirely doable. Blueprint book below.
