Solar farm with perfect ratio.

Post by BrainlessTeddy » Sun Sep 22, 2019 5:00 pm

I made this solar farm some time ago and thought I would share it now.

336 / 400 = 0.84 (perfect ratio)

This blueprint is only 4 * 4 substations big but you can place 4 or even 9 of them in a square and make your own bigger blueprint.

I don't know if you are tired of solar farms tbh. Nuclear power seems to be more popular.

Solar farms are always good for megabases and saving UPS. This looks quite cool though. Now make us one with Industrial Revolution modded panels and accus? Lol

I play vanilla unfortunately but I was kinda interested in IR. Maybe I'll give IR a try after lauchning a rocket in vanilla (This will probably never happen. I played Factorio for about 550 hours and didn't lauch a single rocket...).

You'll get there, don't worry... I think I launched my first rocket at about 850 hr mark. Although I started playing at a time when one of the sciences couldn't be made even because of some missing recipe or something. Can't even remember anymore.

Are 11 roboports really needed ?

Could remove the one in the middle and replace it with a radar. That'll fix the symetry issue.

No, but how would you fill the empty space instead? And more roboports means faster recharging for your bots.

I don't see how that would fix the symmetry issue...

Cause there's 11 roboports.

But having an even number of roboports doesn't make the blueprint symmetrical.

No, but how would you fill the empty space instead? And more roboports means faster recharging for your bots.
Each roboport wastes 1.2 solar panels (+accu) worth of power for passive drain even after the solar field is complete. So about 3% of the area of your blueprint does not supply any power at all to the factory. Conclusion: removing roboports would increase the power-per-space ratio of your blueprint, and you could fill the "empty space" with more panels/accus.

Good point! But when I fill the "empty space" with solar panels and accus the ratio wouldn't be perfect. :D

Remember that the so-called "perfect" ratio actually means "just enough accumulators to go through the night without brownouts assuming perfectly flat demand" - which it won't be...

Yeah, I know. Maybe I'll remove some roboports from the middle and place some accus instead.

Personally i just build solar fields and accu fields seperately, i find that easier to expand.
Accus <10% left after the night? -> more accus.
Accus not 100% full before the night? -> more solars

I prefer having one blueprint you can place and don't have to worry about power production again.

I'm doing the same.
Depending on how crazy I go with lights in my factory, real accu/solar ratio can shift quite a bit towards more accus anyway.

I noticed something with solar panel layouts. Technically a "normal" 18x18 substation in the middle design wastes space,32 to be exact. (I had never thought to fill it with accumulators before seeing the OP's blueprint, oops!) There's a way to use normal power poles to waste less space, but making a three solar wide 10 panel or so tall rectangle of solar panels with power poles in 1x3 gaps up the middle. It's only a little bit of less overall space (more space is taken up by power poles vs substations, but there's less wasted, so slightly higher space efficiency) but in large set-ups it could provide slightly higher density needed.

You can always take your perfect ratio blueprint but replace every solar panel / accumulator with a field of solar panels or accumulators. Scale it up oh some 100 times.

Since your consumption of energy is not continuous and perfect, why should your providing ratio should be ?
I try to do 1:0.9 to ensure I have enough accus, and due to laser consumption which is not intended nor predictable.
