Von-Neumann Factorio

Can a factory be self-replicating? Well no, but I think I got pretty close.

Album here: https://imgur.com/a/A1694

3 features that would make this quite a bit easier to grow to truly preposterous sizes:
  • Allow ctrl+placing blueprints so they ignore conflicts and just place what they can (same way you can place extractor blueprints outside ore fields).
  • A central list of all trains and the ability to control their orders from it. Maybe it could be a mid-late game "control center" building or something.
  • Just any sort of load balancing for train stations. Grouping stops as a single "logical" station or special rail block that just instructs trains to pick any of the platforms following it - whatever works.
Guess it's time to look into mods! I feel satisfied to have "finished" the stock game as things stand

I believe his name was "von Neumann", not newmann. Well, at least if you use his late name. ;)

Well, what has that Factory to do with him? Why that weird layout?
Greetings, Nova.
Factorio is one of the greatest games I ever played, with one of the best developers I ever heard of.

I didn't know that definition, but it still doesn't say what this Factory has to do with that. You can't automate the building of new things without user interaction, as far as I know.

While I really like your approach with tiles I have to agree that this is not a von neumann machine since it is not self-replicating.

It goes into this direction: https://forums.factorio.com/forum/vie ... f=6&t=7406

In short: if you have some mechanism, which can decide depending on the surroundings, it can choose from a set of blueprints, what and when to build next. The result is then a self-replicating von-Neumann Factory.
Cool suggestion: Eatable MOUSE-pointers.

Epic build and the only thing discussed is how the naming was wrong. Great work here SilentSam keep it up.

As for the jam problem the only sure fire way is to leave the circles with no lights in them. Have only signals at the entrance to each tile and not inside the circles. You have so many roundabout that there might not even be slow downs for waiting on open circles.
