This is a beaconed mine setup that covers 50% of the ores with 60% space effisciency (you'll have to shift it of 5 tiles after the first depletion) but have a bonus speed of +355% (4.55 times faster than normal)
It produce as much ore as possible (prod modules) as a cost as low as possible (speed modules).
The basic pattern is about 60 tiles wide and 6 tiles high.
So if you do an axial symmetry, you can cover a mine that is about120 tiles wide and infinity heigh.
You can also add speed beacons rows to the left and right sides.

Sorry, but I don't think that would work.

I was experimenting with 4-miner units, and I made something like this:
Image
This would be the ultimate-perfect mining setup, if Factorio allowed it (it would also have a coverage of ≈92.31%). But unless the devs (or a mod) made underground belts that can stretch indefinitely, it will not be perfect. Also, there would need to be a way to power all of it, because there is no space included to do that. On top of these, there was a problem mentioned with using belts earlier that told how the miners feeding directly into the ends of the belts will only feed one lane of them. The devs would have to fix this too (like maybe make the miner deposition act as a splitter --feeding alternate lanes).

Anyways, we have the setup, but now we need a substation to power it. You can replace any of the middle miners with a substation, but this would be sloppy and it would drop the coverage all the way down to ≈86.54%, which is redundant. Since this design is theoretically perfect, I don't think any other design, even with 3-miner units, could do better with a substation than what I have now. So, in other words, unless the devs do something, no, that won't happen. Sorry.

Factorio
If you're not against the use of mods, then this setup could actually work with a mod called "powered entities".

Try this, covers 100% ?, the one tile unused is the tile you see me taking a weewee.

Fully modular as well, just connect on the powerpoles. Add speed/prod/eff mods as you like.

...but I doubt you can get anywhere near 100% coverage without putting any roboports on the coal.

boring, always the buzzkillers.... How about YAY COOL DESIGN? But I guess with Japs the glass is always half empty... whats next?

FYI 351 miners in this image

Well, it looks like I underestimated the range of roboports.

YAY COOL DESIGN!

But allow me kill some more of your buzz :). Since every miner has its own chest, while in the earlier designs 3 miners shared 2 chests, your design is actually less efficient. Every four miners (36 tiles)use an additional 5 tiles (4 chests plus 1 pole), so your efficiency is 36/41 = 87.8%. The earlier design posted uses 3 additional tiles (2 chests plus 1 pole) per 3 miners for 90% efficiency (with the added benefit of being able to fit in belts instead of chests if desired)

hi i saw a screen with bobmonium, and if you are ok to use Substations, then maybe 4 placed (1) in each corner, could eliminate the need for any other power poles, and let you place more miners down too?
(also me from the mod portal - im not dustine lol) = https://mods.factorio.com/mods/Dustine/ ... ssion/9108

I love this design and I'm trying to implement it but the poles don't seem to cover all the miners or connect to other poles when tiling. What am I missing? I followed the diagram and the poles are in the same spots.
