It's easy to connect a line of black-and-white lamps that operate independently on different signals.
Here is a method of doing it with colored lamps. It does require one combinator per lamp, but that's a lot better than one combinator per color, or one wire per lamp.

Brilliant! I've added a sequencer with modulo to make a scrolling color "fader":
One could also build a circle that changes colors from outside to inside (or vice versa). Next: render a plasma animation
