removing a specific resource from a belt

Simple problem: I have a belt with iron-plates, copper-plates and steel and I want to remove just the steel. Is there a way using smart-inserters/smart chests to remove just the steel?

PS: the mixed belt is central in my centralized smelting set-up. So keeping the lines pure isn't a solution here.

You can use a smart inserter with a filter for steel.

If you want to remove ALL the steel, make sure you have enough inserters and storage.

One thing worth mentioning about a mixed belt is that you generally want to sort EVERYTHING off the belt using smart inserters. If you just remove the steel and iron, your belt only has copper, unless the iron or steel storage fills up, then you get mixed stuff in with your copper because the smart inserters have nowhere to put it.
