Here's the savegame, I'm running a bunch of mods, but none that affect rails (at least, I don't think I am, I've disabled farl, not using rail over water bridges)

I decided I like shortcuts, and found three blueprint books for two/four lane rail networks
https://www.reddit.com/r/factorio/comme ... railworld/

So, it should just work right? Have the offramp, offload the coal, then go back. But it won't go back. As I'm uploading this I'm thinking to myself that this is not a dual headed locomotive network and you're supposed to use on/offramps in tandem so trains flow all one way.

I do prefer dual headed locomotives, it makes stations thinner which is useful for when I want to offload coal or oil.

I've played this game for nearly 900 hours now, but when it comes to railways, I'm still a noob. I've done single lane railways but it's not practical for more than 3 locomotive trains.

Thus, I'd

Your train has access off the rails to the siding, but when it tries to return from the siding to the mainline, the rail connections force it to go the wrong way on the mainline tracks. It can go north on the southbound (left) track, or south on the northbound (right) track. Connect rails so the train can head north on the right track or south on the left track. Or both, if you have coal consumption stations in both directions.
