How to calculate the number of machines a belt can support?

Don't know how to use a machine? Looking for efficient setups? Stuck in a mission?

How to calculate the number of machines a belt can support?

Post by Tseitsei »

Sorry a noob question. I'm really new to the game so here goes...

Say I have a full belt (let's say yellow belt) of copper plates coming in. How can I calculate how many level 2 Assembly Machines it can feed properly?
And please don't just say tell the right number but explain how to calculate it so I can do it myself in the future :)

You can find the belt throughput here: https://wiki.factorio.com/Belt_transport_system, the consumption of your assembly machines depends obviously on the recipe: Recipe input x crafting speed / crafting time.

So if I use Assemble Machine 2 and make copper wire:
Recipe input = 1
Crafting speed = 0.75
Crafting time = 0.5
1*0.75/2 = 1.5 copper per second.

Yellow belt throughput is 13.33/s
So 13.33/1.5 = 8.88

So 1 full yellow belt cam feed 8.88 copper wire machines. So I should propably build 9

Correct?

Technically "yes", but putting wires on the belt halves your throughput compared to copper plates and creating the wires where needed ("direct inserting").

Bad example

Yeah I am currently direct feeding them in to green circuit assemblers. So I now have 9 copper wire machines feeding in to 6 green circuit machines :)
This setup seems to be working nicely...

Orrrr............ u just skip all this math nonsense and use a very handy mod which just shows u how much items per sec it produces (counting beacons and so on ofc)

dont have the name currently in my brain, if i dont forget ill edit it (or u google urself if you interested in it)
