Can't get signals to work for a simple intersection

One or both of the trains on this route keep going "No Path".

It's a simple intersection, with two trains that run forward-and-reverse between outposts and my base. The tracks are highlighted in different colors, indicating that they are different blocks, so the signals should not prevent normal operation unless there's a train passing through the intersection.

There's one signal at each side of the intersection, but the game does not let me freely choose which side of the tracks the signals go on (as you can tell from the photos).

What on earth am I doing wrong?

This should not be anywhere near as difficult as it is. I've had this problem in previous games, and have just given up and either not run the train, or run long parallel routes to avoid crossing tracks.

Chain signal before the intersection. Normal signal after. Place them as close as possible, so the wait times are minimal

The chain signals are important. They check if the train can leave the next block and go red if not

Also keep in mind that if a train is supposed to go both ways you need signals on either side of the track. The signals also indicate the direction

Ok, I have the little white boxes now that let me put signals on both sides.

So for this intersection I need 8 regular signals (2 on each side) and 8 chain signals farther back?

Still getting no path.

One way, traffic going right and up; and two way.

No, you put a chain signal before the crossing. And a normal signal after the crossing to end the block. Then the train will only enter the intersection if it can leave the block.

The two-way signals need to be exactly opposite each other, so they'll connect

Still No Path with all signals as described.

The purple train at the bottom right is "No Pathing"

Can you post the save?

I'm not sure how to do that, sorry.

It's only "No Pathing" upon leaving the unload station. When driven to the remote end, it can get back just fine.

That signaling makes no sense. You want what Mr. Tact posted on the right side

A chain signal checks the next signal after it. So want it before the intersection to check the status of the signal after the intersection

Ah, got it. I'd missed the visual difference. Swapped to those and still "No Path" until after the last signal intersection even though the lights are green to go.

Ok, I think I found a rogue signal (on the "return" side of the tracks) and deleted it. The loop seems to be working now, thank you all!
