Inserter belt vs chests

I was using the circuit logic for inserting nuclear fuel into a reactor only when needed that is mentioned in the above forum post.

It was not working and I was unsure why. I initially had the inserters (blue ones) grabbing off of red belts. It seemed that they were too slow in grabbing the item when they were triggered by A=1 and would fail to insert anything.

I eventually changed the inserters to be removing from requester chests instead of the red belts and this fixed the issue, nothing with the circuit network was changed.

The belts were completely compressed and it was a single loop so the items were not even moving on them.

Not sure why the inserters should be unable to remove the item from the belt and it is required to be removed from a chest.

insertes will not take items off belts when triggered by a single-tick pulse. you need to make the signal stay true until the inserter got an item in its hand. (unable to test it right now, but that's what i think i recall)

for chests the single tick pulse works, you found that out already.

Yes I know why it isn't working, I just don't see how it should work. Not sure if this is a bug or not and I didn't know if the devs knew.

The screenshots are from before I switched to chests for the system.

I am also including the string for the setup.

i can't really make heads or tails of the circuit, but i'm guessing Manron is correct about the condition being a single tick.
not sure why there is a counter in the circuit. you should be able to manage fuel insertion with steam level and empty fuel cell count etc.

It is a single tick, I just don't see why it can pick up off the chest and not a belt.

Im sure there are other ways it could be done, and I have it working. I just posted this so the devs would know about the belt vs chest issue which seems to be a bug.

it takes longer than a tick (1 60th of a second) to pick up off the belt. it starts to reach for it, the tick ends, the inserter stops.
from a chest it can grab the item instantly.

it should work if you add a simple SR latch that sets on your signal and resets on 'read hand contents' >= [the number of inserters you are using to insert fuel]. iirc once the inserter has finished grabbing one item it will complete the insertion.

if that doesnt work you could add a timer to make your signal stay true for as long as required, but that might be failing in case of brownouts.


as a side note, how are you getting rid of the spent fuel? if you use an inserter to remove the spent fuel you can use its 'read hand contents' on 'hold' to trigger your inserter to grab new fuel. your signal then would have to trigger the unlading inserters. they are grabbing from the reactor (which is technicylly a chest) so a single tick pulse will work for them.

if you use identical inserters for insertion and extraction the condition will always be true for the exact time it takes to move one item into the reactor, even in case of brownouts.

Ah, so limit the inserters to only remove spent fuel when the steam is below a certain level and when they have a fuel cell that triggers the inserter.
