Why can I not make steel plates in an assembling machine 3?

I am using sandbox (I have steel processing) and I encountered a problem. When I go to automate the making of steel plates, they don't show up. Is there a way I can fix this or get around it?

They go into a furnace, not an assembly machine.

As Caine said, they are smelted and not crafted.
With the exception of assemblies (I don't know why the logic is different for them), if you hold your cursor over the item you want to craft it will display the buildings that can craft it.
That means that you can see if it's smelted using a furnace or processed using a chemical factory.

The logic is different because they can be created by hand.
